Our Culture
Many influences, one strong culture
Nova Scotia has a rich and colourful background of Celtic, Acadian, other European, Mi’kmaq and African heritage. We also count among our citizens, people from South and East Asia, South America, Australia and New Zealand. We are well known around the world for our hospitality and good nature.
Because we are largely a land of immigrants and the descendents of immigrants, we have become a sturdy, self-supporting society. We take care of each other when challenges arise and we are known for our selfless nature.
Diversity. One Province, Many faces.
Multiculturalism is a very important part of Canada’s cultural fabric. You, and other immigrants from around the world, are encouraged to maintain and celebrate your heritage.
Nova Scotia is pleased to be home for people from many different parts of the world. MANS, the Multicultural Association of Nova Scotia is dedicated to celebrating the different cultures in Nova Scotia. They provide a variety of programs and services that promote our diversity. Each year, they organize the very popular Nova Scotia Multicultural Festival. MANS also hosts an ethno-cultural database (http://www.mans.ns.ca/search.html) that you can search to find people in your community who share your cultural heritage.
