Province Introduces New Immigration Option

A new immigration option for Nova Scotia is designed to attract young newcomers who will benefit the province's economy. 

The new stream is for non-dependent children of immigrants already living in the province under the Nova Scotia Nominee Program. 

"The primary goal is to help meet the labour market needs of the province," said Ramona Jennex, Minister of Immigration. "Nova Scotia is facing an aging and declining population and increased immigration is one way to help ensure our economy grows and our communities thrive."

The Office of Immigration is accepting proposals to develop or enhance websites that help immigrants integrate into Nova Scotia communities. Eligible projects will focus on developing online tools, content and services for prospective immigrants and newcomers to Nova Scotia.

Details Announced for Nominee Program Expanded Residency Refund

All immigrants in the economic stream of the provincial nominee program who are still living in Nova Scotia after 12 consecutive months are now eligible to get back money they paid into the program. Details of the expanded residency refund were announced today, Oct. 21, by Immigration Minister Len Goucher.

Les 13 membres du conseil possèdent collectivement une vaste gamme de connaissances et d'antécédents. Les nouveaux membres sont des leaders dans le domaine des affaires, des municipalités, de la main-d'oeuvre et des communautés, et plusieurs d'entre eux ont quitté leur pays d'origine pour bâtir une carrière très enrichissante et couronnée de succès en Nouvelle-Écosse.

New Immigration Advisory Council Announced

The first members of the province's new immigration advisory council were announced today, Aug. 20, by Immigration Minister Len Goucher.

The 13 council members represent a wide spectrum of expertise and backgrounds. Among the new appointees are business, municipal, labour and community leaders, many of whom left their homelands to build highly successful rewarding careers in Nova Scotia. 

Refund Program Will Expand After Auditor General's Final Report

The province will expand its residency refund under the Nova Scotia Nominee Program, pending a final report from the Auditor General's Office in the fall.

As a result, Economic Stream nominees who signed employment contracts before Oct. 12, 2007, may be become eligible for a residency refund. 

Applications Wanted for Immigration Advisory Council

The province is accepting applications from people to serve on an immigration advisory council to advise government on the needs of business and immigrants as they relate to immigration matters.

Immigration Web Projects Awarded Funds

The province has approved funding for 10 projects aimed at developing or enhancing websites that help immigrants settle in Nova Scotia.

Province Consulting on New Immigration Stream

The province is consulting with immigrant and business organizations to help attract more entrepreneurs to Nova Scotia.

The Office of Immigration will use the input to implement a new entrepreneur stream under the Nova Scotia Nominee Program. It will also use information gathered about similar streams in other jurisdictions.

The stream is for people who want to settle and establish their own business in the province. It is expected to be launched in the spring.

Immigration Fees Eliminated

The province is eliminating more provincial immigration fees, a move to attract more skilled workers and other immigrants to Nova Scotia. The decision, which takes effect Saturday, July 1, was announced today, June 30, by Immigration Minister Carolyn Bolivar-Getson.
