Medications and Prescriptions

After visiting a doctor, they may choose to prescribe a medication to treat your condition. A prescription can only be given by a doctor. It contains the following information:

  • The doctor’s name and address
  • Your name
  • The name of the medication being prescribed
  • Directions (when to take it, how many times a day)
  • The doctor’s signature
  • The amount of times the prescription can be renewed

You can take a prescription to one of many pharmacies in drug stores, large grocery stores and some hospitals. A pharmacist will take the prescription and issue medications. It is important that you share any health problems and allergies with your doctor and pharmacist, as well as telling them what other medication you are currently taking.

Your pharmacist will make you aware of any possible complications that can arise from using the prescribed drugs. They can also answer any health concerns or questions you may have about the medication.

Prescription drugs are not covered by Medical Services Insurance. Private or complimentary health insurance may offset the cost of prescription drugs.
